How to distinguish genuine and fake organic yarn?

1. Verification of certification and testing documents

Verification of certification marks

Authentic organic yarn must have international certification marks (such as GOTS, OCS), and the authenticity of the code can be verified through the official website of the certification body;

The test report should include fiber composition, heavy metal residues and pesticide residue data (for example, organic cotton yarn should have 0% pesticide residue).

Supply chain traceability

It is required to provide proof of origin and organic planting base information. Regular organic yarn can be traced from planting to spinning. Bulk unmarked products should be cautious.

2. Identification of physical properties

Combustion test

Organic cotton emits a smell similar to burning paper when burning, and the ash is gray-white powder; if chemical fibers (such as polyester) are mixed, the combustion will clump and be accompanied by a pungent plastic smell.

Touch and appearance ‌

There is no chemical additive residue on the surface of organic cotton yarn, and it feels smooth and not prickly. Unbleached yarn is light yellow or natural colored cotton color (such as brown, green);

Dyed organic yarn should be dyed by environmentally friendly dyeing process, with soft and uniform color. If the color is too bright or glaring, it may contain chemical dyes.

Pilling and shrinkage test ‌

Take a yarn sample and rub the surface of the fabric. True organic cotton is not easy to pilling due to its high fiber strength (breaking length ≥33 kilometers);

The shrinkage rate after washing should be ≤3%. If it is severely deformed or hardened, it may be mixed with low-quality recycled cotton.

3. Functional and environmental verification ‌

Moisture absorption and breathability ‌

Soak the yarn in water and wring it dry. The water absorption of organic cotton is more than 50% higher than that of ordinary cotton, and the drying speed is faster.

Chemical residue detection ‌

Use pH test paper to test the yarn soaking liquid. The pH value of organic yarn should be 6-7 (close to human skin). Bleached or chemically treated yarn may be alkaline.

4. Price and market comparison

Due to the high planting and processing costs, the unit price of organic yarn is usually 30%-50% higher than that of ordinary cotton. Too low a price may be adulterated or recycled;

Be wary of unbranded products claiming to be "low-priced tail orders" or "bulk imports", and give priority to packaging with clear origin and batch numbers.

Identification process recommendations

Primary screening: Check the certification mark and test report;

Physical experiment: Touch, combustion test combined with hygroscopicity verification;

In-depth verification: Send to a third-party agency for inspection of pesticide residues and fiber fineness (organic cotton fiber fineness should be 7000-8500 m/g).
