What Is Functional Yarn?

Functional yarn is yarn that does a specific job beyond basic strength and comfort. Typical jobs include odor control, a cool touch, faster drying and warmth, as well as conductivity, flame resistance and recycled content. The function comes from the fiber, the yarn structure, a finish, or a combination of these.

Where the function sits matters, because it decides how long the effect lasts. In our functional viscose fibers, for example, the additive goes into the spinning solution, so it ends up inside the fiber instead of on the surface. As a result, the effect holds up to washing far better than a surface finish usually does. In contrast, profiled polyester moves sweat along its grooved cross-section by capillary action. Before sampling, ask whether the function is in the fiber or on it. That answer often explains why one yarn keeps its performance after dyeing and washing while another loses it.

We do not publish resistance values for conductive yarn, because a sensor glove and an anti-static uniform need different ranges. Instead, we agree on the target and the test method with you before sampling.

Performance proof

• Ask which test method sits behind each claim. For antibacterial yarn, that could be ISO 20743, AATCC TM100 or JIS L 1902, and their results are not interchangeable.
• Check whether the lab tested the yarn, a fabric or a finished garment, and after how many washes.

Lot-to-lot consistency

• Confirm how the supplier controls raw materials and color from batch to batch.
• Keep a reference cone and an approved fabric swatch, then compare every reorder against them.

Compliance and documents

• Match the documents to your market, since EU and US rules differ on fiber names and claim wording.
• Read the scope of each certificate. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 covers harmful substances, but it says nothing about an antibacterial rate or recycled content.
• For recycled claims, ask for the GRS scope certificate and a transaction certificate (TC) for your shipment. If you sell in the US, the FTC’s summary of the Green Guides is also worth reading before you write any eco claim.
• If you supply supermarkets, lock the full document package before production starts.

MOQ and lead time

• Ask whether the MOQ applies per color or per order. Also keep the sample quantity separate from the bulk MOQ, because the two often differ.
• Request sample, production and dispatch dates as three separate dates, since transit time comes on top of them.

What is the MOQ for wholesale functional yarn from China?

It depends on the item and the color. Some stock listings start at 1 kg per color, such as our WARMPLUS-R and GRS recycled polyester/cotton yarns. Others start at 25 kg per color, like the 32S AG+ silver-ion yarn, while a few bulk items, such as the 30s COOLSILK yarn, start at 5,000 kg. Send us the exact item, count and shades, and we will confirm the MOQ in your quotation.

Can you support OEM/ODM and private-label projects?

Yes. We can develop a yarn to your count, blend, color and function, then confirm feasibility, sampling, MOQ and timing for that spec. For private label, we also agree on cone weight, labels and carton marks with you before production.

How do I verify antibacterial or cooling claims?

Start with the method. Antibacterial methods such as ISO 20743, AATCC TM100 and JIS L 1902 differ in test organisms, contact time and pass criteria. So a report under one method may not satisfy a customer who specifies another. For cooling, first decide which effect you claim. A q-max test measures the initial cool touch, while wicking and drying-rate tests cover cooling through sweat management. What are typical sample and bulk lead times?

Several of our stock listings dispatch 1 to 2 days after order confirmation. Custom production on those items normally takes 3 to 15 days. Still, color approval, order size and the production schedule can change these dates. That is why each quotation gives separate sample, production and dispatch dates. Also note that none of them includes international transit.

Do you ship functional yarn from China to overseas buyers?

Yes. We currently serve customers in more than 10 countries and regions. Tell us the destination country, the delivery address or warehouse, and your preferred Incoterms rule. We will then confirm the route and delivery term in the quotation.

Which certificates can you provide?

ISO 9001, OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 and GRS documents are available for selected products. Some recycled items, such as our 65/35 GRS recycled polyester/cotton yarn, can also come with a transaction certificate on eligible orders. Because coverage varies by item, tell us the product, destination market and intended claim, and we will confirm what applies.

What should we compare in quotes from functional yarn suppliers in China?

Compare like with like: the same fiber content, count system and ply, spinning method, and functional component with its test evidence. Then line up MOQ per color, price and currency, Incoterms, lead time, sampling cost, payment terms and packing. Finally, request samples, because a sample shows whether the quoted spec matches the physical yarn.
