Hand knitters buy the same cones and hold several strands together. It belongs to our thermal warm yarn range, so most of it goes into autumn and winter collections.

Why a 50/50 Wool-Acrylic Blend
Half wool is a high share for a blended knitting yarn, and you can feel it in the hand. Wool fibers carry a natural crimp that traps still air, so the knit holds body heat. The same crimp gives the fabric spring, which helps cuffs, ribs and necklines recover after wear. Wool also absorbs moisture vapor (its standard moisture regain is about 15%), so a sweater feels less clammy indoors.
Acrylic handles the practical side. Acrylic fiber is cheaper than wool, so a 50/50 cone comes in below the price of an all-wool cone of the same count. The fiber is also lighter, about 1.17 g/cm³ against 1.31 g/cm³ for wool, which gives the yarn a fuller body at the same count. Acrylic takes color well too, and bright reds, blues and greens stay clear.
The blend still has limits. Hot water and heavy agitation make the wool half felt, so finished garments need a cool, gentle wash. Acrylic fibers can pill where a garment rubs, such as the underarms and cuffs. Twist level, stitch density and finishing decide how much. Our blended yarn buying guide covers these trade-offs in more depth.
Key Features of 2/28NM Wool Acrylic Yarn
- 50% wool content: warmer and springier than acrylic-rich blends
- Two-ply balanced construction: less spirality in single jersey and less skew after washing
- 2/28NM count: runs single-end on fine-gauge flat machines and doubles up easily for coarser gauges
- Stock shades for quick sampling, plus custom shades matched to your color card
Where 2/28NM Wool Acrylic Yarn Works Best
We supply this yarn mainly for autumn and winter knitwear: sweaters, cardigans, scarves, shawls, hats and gloves. It also works for sampling and seasonal runs before a style moves to bulk production.
Machine Knitting
On flat knitting machines, mills usually run 2/28NM wool acrylic yarn single-end at fine gauges around 12G. For 7G or coarser gauges, they feed two or more ends together. If you are unsure how many ends to use, send your gauge and stitch with your inquiry.
Hand Knitting and Crochet
A single strand of 2/28NM wool acrylic yarn gives about 1,400 m per 100 g, which is finer than most lace-weight yarns. Hand knitters and crocheters usually hold several strands together. Three or four strands come close to fingering weight, and five or six get near DK. Holding two different shades together also gives a soft marled look.
Weaving, Seaming and Embroidery
Weavers use it for soft scarves and shawls. Knitwear factories also link and seam sweater panels with matching cones, so the seams match the body in color and wash behavior. The two-ply yarn works for wool embroidery on knitted pieces as well.
FAQ About 2/28NM Wool Acrylic Yarn
What does 2/28NM mean?
It means two plies of Nm 28 single yarn. Nm counts meters per gram, so each single runs 28 m per gram. Plying two together halves that to a nominal Nm 14: about 14,000 m per kg, or roughly Ne 16.5/2 in cotton count. Some suppliers write the same yarn as Nm 28/2. A 1/28 yarn is a single ply with twice the length per kilo, so check which one a quote refers to. Our fiber and yarn linear density guide shows the conversion formulas.
Is a 50/50 blend warmer than 85/15 acrylic-wool?
Usually, yes, when you compare the same gauge and stitch. More wool means more crimp to trap air and more moisture absorption, and the knit recovers its shape better. The 85/15 blend costs less and leans toward acrylic’s easy care. If your target retail price is tight, compare it with our 28NM/2 85% acrylic 15% wool yarn, which comes in the same count.
Will a wool-acrylic sweater pill?
It can. Acrylic fibers are strong, so loose fibers that tangle on the surface stay attached instead of breaking off. Higher twist, a tighter stitch and the right finish all reduce it. If your buyer specifies a pilling grade, include it in your inquiry and test a knitted swatch before bulk. Our article on what really controls fabric pilling walks through each factor.
How should customers wash garments knitted from this yarn?
Treat them as wool garments. Half the fiber is wool, so hot water and strong agitation will shrink and felt the fabric. A cool hand wash or a wool cycle, followed by flat drying, is the safe default. Wool also reacts badly to alkaline detergents, so a neutral wool detergent works best. Set the final care label only after a wash test on your own fabric.
Why do custom shades on this blend need a lab dip?
Wool and acrylic take different dye classes: acid dyes for wool and cationic dyes for acrylic. Both fibers have to land on the same shade, or the yarn looks two-toned. So we match custom shades to your color card with a lab dip, and you approve it before bulk dyeing. Stock shades skip this step, which is why they ship faster.
What should I check before ordering 2/28NM wool acrylic yarn?
Start with the count notation, because 2/28 (two-ply) and 1/28 (single) are different yarns. Ask for the current technical data sheet. Then knit a swatch on your own machine and gauge to check hand feel and fabric weight. For custom colors, approve the lab dip first. Stock orders ship in 1–2 days after confirmation, and custom orders usually take 3–15 days.
