Paper Yarn: Types, Counts, and What It Actually Does in Fabric

Customers ask us the same question first: is paper yarn really made from paper? Yes, but not the kind you print on. Manufacturers start with a thin sheet of plant fiber. They slit it into narrow strips and twist the strips into yarn. It handles like a real knitting fiber, not a piece of stationery.

We keep paper yarn separate from paper boards, paper cloth, and nonwoven sheets like Tyvek. Shoe factories have used those materials for years. Most of them never reach a spinning frame. Paper yarn goes through spinning. That distinction matters when you choose a fiber for socks, knitwear, or light apparel.

Where Paper First Entered Footwear and Clothing

Paper has clothed and shod people longer than most buyers expect. In ancient China, craftsmen shaped paper into hats, shoes, and simple armor. That’s the earliest recorded use of paper as wearable material. During the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties, wartime cloth shortages hit hard. People made paper-fur coats from paper-mulberry bark to stay warm.

The modern chapter opened in the 20th century, once waterproof glues and coatings made paper practical for fashion. A well-known example, the recycled-newspaper shoe, came out of China and shipped overseas in volume. By the 21st century, factories could knit and weave paper yarn after waterproofing it. It moved into shoes and apparel as a serious fiber rather than a novelty.

Paper Materials vs. Paper Yarn: Two Different Things

Before we get to the yarn itself, it helps to separate paper yarn from its look-alikes.

Shoe paperboard covers insole board, heel board, and half-sole board. Makers blend waste cotton, waste hemp, and kraft wood pulp to produce it. The better grades stay flexible, water-resistant, and stiff enough to behave like leather. Functional shoe board runs about 2–3 mm thick, with a density above 1.1 g/cm³. Factories adjust the blend to suit different shoe constructions.

Paper cloth comes next. Weavers make it from imported or recycled kraft paper. It typically resists water, moisture, and mildew, so it goes directly onto a shoe upper.

Nonwoven paper works differently: manufacturers bond or entangle fibers rather than weave them. The result breathes and biodegrades. Foamed grades also add soft cushioning, which is why nonwoven paper shows up in garment linings and padding. Tyvek, the DuPont material, stands out here. Workers flash-spin high-density polyethylene into a sheet that acts like paper, film, and fabric at once. The hard structure feels crisp and close to paper; the soft structure drapes closer to cloth. Hard Tyvek shows up as shoe reinforcement or on special-edition uppers. Soft Tyvek ends up in windbreakers, stagewear, and protective garments.

None of these go through spinning. Paper yarn does, and that’s the line we draw.

What Paper Yarn Is Made Of

Paper yarn belongs to the cellulose fiber family, not the synthetic one. Factories make it through a physical process rather than a chemical one.

The raw material is mostly natural plant fiber: wood pulp, or abaca (Manila hemp). Abaca is the core fiber behind Japanese washi yarn. Washi also draws on kozo (paper mulberry), mitsumata, and gampi bark fibers, sometimes blended with quality wood fiber.

The process itself stays simple. Workers form the fiber into an ultra-thin paper sheet. They slit the sheet into fine strips and twist the strips into yarn. Nothing dissolves and nothing regenerates in that sequence. That’s why we call paper yarn a physical fiber: the cellulose keeps its original structure the whole way through.

Washi fiber runs longer than ordinary paper fiber, and that length matters more than it sounds. Typical washi fiber measures 4–12 mm, against 0.7–3.5 mm for the short wood-pulp fiber in standard paper yarn. This extra length gives washi its better toughness and structural integrity.

Paper Yarn Types

Paper yarn falls into three broad groups.

Pure paper yarn is exactly what it sounds like: twisted paper strips with no core. It stays the most rustic and the most brittle of the three. That’s why it mostly shows up in decorative or low-stress uses.

Composite paper yarn does the commercial heavy lifting. A paper strip wraps around a core yarn (cotton, polyester, or nylon). A fine fixing yarn holds the whole thing together. The core carries the strength; the paper strip brings the dry, cool hand and the texture. Paper-cotton and paper-Tencel blends belong to this group too, and they knit more easily than pure paper.

Paper Yarn vs. Other Cellulose Fibers

On paper, paper yarn shares a family with cotton, linen, viscose, and bamboo. In practice, it behaves like a different material, and three factors explain why.

In our factory, the medium counts move the most volume by a wide margin. Counts above 60S exist, but the physical limits of the paper fiber make them hard to produce at scale. They stay rare and mostly reserved for small premium custom runs. Mills also commonly ply paper yarn, writing it as 20S/2 or 30S/2. Plying lifts the breaking strength enough for garment use.

The Environmental Case for Paper Yarn

The eco story holds up through the whole chain, not just on the label.

Paper yarn’s raw material comes from natural wood pulp and, in some grades, recycled waste paper. That eases pressure on petroleum-based synthetics. Production uses less energy and produces fewer emissions than conventional textile processing. The route just runs through pulping, slitting, and twisting. That puts paper yarn in the same conversation as other low-impact materials. On disposal, the fiber’s cellulose base lets it degrade naturally. Some grades break down completely in soil within 14 days, avoiding the long-term microplastic problem polyester creates.

Strengths and Limits, from the Sample Room

Paper yarn breathes, carries a natural creased texture, absorbs and dries fast, and stays cool against the skin. Some of the better composite grades test at up to three times the wash and abrasion resistance of cotton. The fiber also breaks down cleanly once you throw it away.

It also has real limits. Pure paper yarn stays stiff, the surface feels rough, and it snaps under high tension. Wash resistance sits below cotton and linen overall, and repeated washing stiffens the hand further. That’s why most garment programs choose a blend or a core-spun composite over 100% paper.

This trade-off is exactly what we test before quoting. We’ve run paper yarn on an 18G sock machine and put it through a wash test. The results match its reputation. It gives a dry hand, dries fast, and feels genuinely cool on the leg. But it also gets a stiffer hand after several washes. Pure paper counts break more often when we don’t watch machine tension closely. Our sample room stays around 28°C when we check summer yarns. At that temperature, a cool, non-sticky claim either holds up or falls apart. On bulk orders, the finer counts stay consistent once we approve the trial roll. The coarse counts need closer inspection for slubs and weak points.

What to Ask a Paper Yarn Supplier

A short list beats a long spec sheet when you’re sourcing.

Is it pure paper yarn or a composite? Composites hold up far better in real wear.

What’s the core yarn? Cotton cores feel best against skin; polyester and nylon cores run tougher.

What’s the actual paper-fiber content? More paper gives a cooler, drier hand and slightly less durability.

Which counts and plies do you offer, and can you send a trial roll before bulk?

Do you have wash-performance data and AATCC or OEKO-TEX test reports for the antibacterial or UV claims?
