What Is Silk Twisting? Functions and Production Precautions

What is silk twisting?

Twisting is a process of applying twist to monofilaments or plied yarns (twisting multiple filaments around one another) to endow them with a certain twist direction and twist level.

In accordance with the specification requirements of finished silk fabrics, the twisting process can modify the appearance effect and physical and mechanical properties of silk yarns. It not only improves the weaving processability of silk yarns, but also meets the appearance and diverse end-use requirements of fabrics.

What is twist direction?

twist direction

In the textile industry, twist direction refers to the twisting direction of yarn. It is divide into left twist and right twist, also known as S twist and Z twist.

Functions of Silk Twisting

(1) Within the critical twist range, it increases the tenacity and wear resistance of silk yarns, reduces fuzzing and end breakage, and improves the fastness of silk fabrics.

(2) It gives the silk yarns a specific shape or fancy effect, endowing the fabric with appearances such as refraction, crepe texture, loop and slub effects.

(3) It enhances the elasticity of silk yarns, improves the wrinkle resistance and air permeability of fabrics, and makes the fabric cool and comfortable to wear.

Production Precautions

(1) There are two twisting methods: dry twisting and wet twisting. Dry twisting is commonly use for regular twisting.

(2) Dry twisting is processe on ordinary silk twisting machines and double twisters, whereas wet twisting is carrie out on special wet twisting machines.

(3) To obtain fancy effects such as hairiness and slubs on the yarn surface, a fancy twisting machine must be use.

(4) During second twisting, the twist direction adopte is generally opposite to that of the first twisting.
