TENCEL™ Modal Spandex Fabric: 200 GSM for Soft Apparel

TENCEL™ Modal spandex fabric is a practical option when a garment needs a fine surface, soft skin contact, fluid drape and light stretch without a tight compression feel. This quality contains 91% TENCEL™ Modal and 9% spandex. Its nominal specifications are 200 GSM, 175 cm usable width and approximately 2.8 metres per kilogram. We normally consider it for T-shirts, base layers, underwear, loungewear and light yoga garments, but the final decision should come from a cut-and-sew sample and wash test, not from composition alone.

In development, the two fibres do different jobs. The Modal-rich face gives the fabric its smooth hand and fluid drape, while 9% spandex supports comfortable movement and recovery. At 200 GSM, the fabric has more coverage and body than a very light summer jersey, yet it remains flexible. Before approving bulk production, we check shrinkage, spirality, colourfastness, pilling and elastic recovery in the intended garment.

The listed weight, width and yield are internally consistent. A 175 cm-wide fabric at 2.8 m/kg works out at roughly 204 GSM, which is close to the nominal 200 GSM after normal rounding. Even so, marker consumption should use the inspected bulk width and weight. A small change in usable width, relaxation or finishing can change the metres per kilogram and garment cost.

Why This Modal Spandex Fabric Feels Soft but Still Moves

Modal supplies most of the touch and drape in this Modal spandex fabric. TENCEL™ describes its branded Modal fibres as wood-based regenerated cellulosic fibres that support moisture control and help fabrics retain softness after repeated washing. Those fibre properties are useful, but fabric structure, dyeing, finishing and garment design still determine the result in the finished garment.

The 9% spandex content changes the behaviour of the cloth. It allows the fabric to follow body movement, then helps it return toward its original dimensions. In hand, the stretch feels easier than a rigid Modal jersey and less restrictive than a fabric developed for firm compression. The percentage alone does not tell us the actual stretch ratio. Yarn form, loop length, knitting tension, heat setting and finishing all matter.

At this stage, a physical sample tells us more than the composition sheet. In our sample room, we stretch the fabric in both directions, release it and compare the relaxed panel with an unhandled retain. We also hang a full-width piece rather than judging a small folded swatch. A 10 cm cutting can feel stable on a table while a longer panel shows more growth under its own weight.

Fine surface and natural drape

The fabric face appears fine and even, so it works well for clean basic styles and solid colours. Its drape makes loose T-shirts and homewear look softer around the body. That same fluidity needs control at cutting and sewing. If a garment has a wide neckline, narrow shoulder or heavy trim, the pattern team should check growth and seam support on the first sample.

Moisture comfort needs the right claim

Modal can absorb and release moisture, and the knitted structure allows air exchange. However, “breathable” and “quick-dry” are not interchangeable claims. Drying time depends on fabric mass, construction, finishing and test conditions. We would describe this Modal spandex fabric as soft and comfortable for spring and summer basics, then run a recognised moisture-management or drying test if a programme requires a measurable quick-dry claim.

Where 200 GSM Modal Spandex Fabric Works Well

At 200 GSM, this TENCEL™ Modal spandex fabric sits in a useful middle range. It is not paper-thin, and it does not have the heavy, firm body of compression jersey. Its smooth face and fluid handle suit garments that stay close to the skin or need an easy drape.

  • T-shirts and fitted tops: the soft surface and light stretch support comfortable everyday fits. Pale shades still need an opacity check on the body.
  • Base layers and undershirts: the cloth can sit under another garment without the stiff hand of a heavier outerwear knit.
  • Loungewear and homewear: natural drape works for relaxed tops, shorts and trousers, provided the pattern accounts for vertical growth.
  • Underwear: 9% spandex supports movement, while the Modal-rich face gives smooth skin contact. Waistband, gusset and seam construction need separate approval.
  • Light yoga and studio wear: suitable for relaxed tops and low-compression pieces after stretch, opacity and recovery checks.

We would not approve it automatically for high-compression leggings, high-abrasion training wear or a sharply structured silhouette. Those uses may require stronger recovery, a denser construction or a different fibre balance. The end use comes first. A soft hand feel cannot compensate for insufficient opacity or bagging at the knee.

How We Evaluate Modal Spandex Fabric Before Bulk

A useful Modal spandex fabric development starts with a clear garment brief. We ask for the intended product, target fit, colour, care label, destination market and required test standard. A lounge T-shirt and a fitted studio top can use the same nominal 200 GSM Modal spandex fabric, yet they do not need the same recovery, seam strength or opacity.

1. Confirm the specification on a conditioned sample

First, we record composition, finished width, GSM and roll yield. We let the sample relax before measurement because an elastane jersey can change after it leaves the roll. On warm days when our sample room is around 28°C, we avoid comparing a newly opened roll with a panel that has already rested overnight. Both pieces need the same conditioning history, otherwise the comparison tells us more about handling than bulk consistency.

2. Check stretch and recovery in the garment direction

Next, we mark the course and wale directions and test the direction that will run around the body. The team records extension under the agreed load and residual growth after release. We do not write “four-way stretch” simply because spandex is present. That description needs evidence from both fabric directions.

3. Make a trial garment or trial roll

A trial garment reveals issues that a hand swatch hides: neckline growth, hem waving, seam puckering, edge curling, show-through and panel twisting. For a new colour or finish, a short trial roll also helps us compare the face, width and handle across the roll before the bulk schedule starts. In our development work, this stage often saves more time than several rounds of comments on courier swatches.

4. Wash the sample under the intended care conditions

We mark a panel, measure it, wash it and compare it with an unwashed retain under the same light. Length and width change should follow the agreed method. ISO 5077 covers the determination of dimensional change after specified washing and drying procedures. The purchase specification should still state the actual wash cycle, temperature, drying method and number of cycles.

After washing, our team checks more than shrinkage. We look for spirality, seam twist, surface fuzzing, pilling, shade change, loss of recovery and a different hand feel. If a line or shade band appears, the greige retain and process record help separate a knitting issue from a dyeing or finishing issue. We keep the defect cutting, its roll position and the process record together so the mill can trace the first stage where the change appeared.

Modal Spandex Fabric Bulk Stability: Cost and Delivery Points

For sourcing teams, the useful part of this Modal spandex fabric is the balance of softness, usable width, coverage and light stretch. The main risk sits in unconfirmed tolerances. Before comparing prices, make sure each supplier quotes the same composition, finished width, finished GSM, colour type, test requirements and packing condition.

  • Usable width: ask whether 175 cm excludes curled or damaged edges.
  • GSM tolerance: agree the allowed range and measurement method rather than accepting “about 200 GSM.”
  • Roll yield: treat 2.8 m/kg as a planning value until bulk inspection confirms width and weight.
  • Shade continuity: identify dye lots on packing lists and roll labels.
  • Elastic recovery: approve a numerical method when fit retention matters.
  • Finishing route: keep the approved hand feel and heat-setting conditions consistent between sample and bulk.
  • Roll inspection: agree how holes, lines, stains, edge damage and shade bands will be graded.

From our factory view, a lower price per kilogram does not always give a lower garment cost. Narrower usable width, higher shrinkage or unstable roll weight can increase consumption and cutting loss. We compare cost per usable metre and expected garment yield, then add the risk of rejected panels or re-cutting.

Documents, Fibre Claims and Hangtag Use

A branded fibre claim for Modal spandex fabric needs paperwork. Ask for the fibre-content record, available transaction or source documents, test reports and current authorisation relevant to the order. A TENCEL™ hangtag should not be promised from a photograph alone; eligibility and artwork use need confirmation for the specific supply chain and product.

The same rule applies to chemical-safety statements. If the programme requires OEKO-TEX® coverage, request the valid certificate number, scope and product class, then check whether the actual fabric and colour fall within that scope. OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 covers textiles tested for harmful substances, with requirements linked to intended skin contact. We do not treat a fibre supplier’s certificate as automatic proof for every dyed finished fabric.

Care-label wording also needs the confirmed wash result. Modal spandex fabric may respond differently to heat, tumble drying and prolonged hanging depending on construction and finish. Approve the label only after the garment wash test, especially for fitted pieces where a small dimensional change affects wear.
